Work experience – Week 1
At the start of the year our Guidance teacher, Mrs Lyons informed us that we had to do 2 weeks of work experience. I was very un-sure of what to do or where to go. When I leave school, I want to join the guards, but the stations can't take on students for work experience, so I had to think of something else. I was limited to where I could go because my mother does not drive so I had to pick somewhere in Portumna as I live in the town. My sister gave me the idea to go down to Supermacs and ask the boss would I do a week of work experience there. My sister works in Supermacs so she helped me get in. Supermacs wouldn't usually take on people for work experience because you would need a uniform, a hat and non-slip shoes which all have to be paid for an ordered but seeing as my sister had all them things I could use hers. So I went in to speak to the boss, Olivia and she was so generous to say yes straight away and had no problem with it.
I started my first week of work experience on the 23rd of October. Supermacs doesn’t open till 11 so I started at that time and I finished at 4 every day, even on Friday because since I was starting later I wanted to make up for the hours that I was missing. On Monday I was greeted by one of the managers, Amie. Amie gave me a tour of Supermacs and it is surprisingly bigger behind the counter than you would think. Every Monday in Supermacs is the cleaning day so I started off by washing the windows inside and out and I scrubbed the paths outside. It was quite boring and hardworking but that is what I had expected because I wouldn't have been able to do anything behind the counter.
Amie was showing me how to use the till, how to use the oils etc.
The next day came and I was working with the boss, Olivia. I was doing the same work on the Tuesday and Wednesday as I did on the Monday. I was mainly cleaning tables, stocking up and dropping down food to the customers. But as I was doing all this, I was teaching myself how to use the till by using it when I had nothng else to do and no customers were in. By Thursday I got more confidence in myself and stepped up to the till and took a few orders, all though I wasn't the best at it and did need a bit of help I had to start somewhere.
At the end of the week the boss, Olivia thanked me for working we week for her and to my surprise she offered me a part time job. I was absolutely delighted with the outcome.
Overall I really enjoyed my work experience in Supermacs , I especially enjoyed communicating with the customers and learning new things whilst I was there.
